Yes Real Prime Minister AKA The Thatcher Sketch (1984) (optional subs)

With optional English subtitles. The real prime minister has tried to write a sketch... performed on the National Viewers and Listeners Awards in 1984. So unfunny it's painfully funny!

4:15. "It went down an absolute bomb!" said Ingham. I'm paraphrasing here but Jonathan Lynn says "it bombed". Ah, the subtleties of the English language 😊
Best? Well, top 5 anyway. Mrs Brown's Boys, Vicar of Dibley, Bless Me Father, and Keeping Up Appearances are all right up there with it.
This show is still relevant today, and yes, "nothing ever changes!"
All them are given high honours. That wust be wrong!!
How dreadful and tasteless.
Stephen Fry Fan That's hilarious
9:02 A few years after this, they starred together again on TV in the drama series "The Camomile Lawn".
Look at Mary Whitehouse creaming her Tory pants ... send in the Daleks...
I detect a tension between these two.
Positive or negative?
Topnotch comedy. At the utmost level.
Frankly, it didn't make any sense to me the dialogue, but had hacker been the prime minister instead of her, it would have been magical.
Thank you for reminding me, I keep forgetting....
They should have kept these in, theyre funnier!
It would have been a lot more fun if hacker played the prime minister and Thatcher his policy consultant just like in the series. It would have been a knock out.
Jim Hacker's character was incompetent - yes, but you always you got the feeling that underneath was a decent man. His utter helplessness regarding the detonators being used by nasty people showed that - and Paul Eddington's genius was to play him flip flopping trying to work out what was best for him/country/headlines !
I wonder if I might crave your momentary indulgence in order to discharge a by no means disagreeable obligation, which has over the years become more or less established practice within government circles as we approach the terminal period of the year, counting, of course, not financial. In fact, not to put too fine a point on it, week 51. And submit to you, with all appropriate deference for your consideration at a convenient juncture, a sincere and sanguine expectation, indeed confidence, indeed, one might go so far as to say, hope, that the aforementioned period may be at the end of the day, when all relevant factors have been taken into consideration, susceptible of being deemed to be such as to merit a final verdict of having been by no means unsatisfactory in its overall outcome, and in the final analysis to give grounds for being judged, on mature reflection, to have been conducive to generating a degree of gratification, which will be seen in retrospect to have been significantly higher than the general average.
9:05 Hiroyuki Sanada, who went on to star in The Last Samurai and West World, and my favorite movie, The Twilight Samurai.
I want to know more about the jewellery heist
Nigel gave us Sir Appleby, an immortal character for generations to come. An amazing talent, it was both joy and sadness to go through his life journey. Along with Paul and Derek, the trio were a masterclass!
@mleedra: BRILLIANT!!!!
You can see Eddington is in a bit of "why are we doing this mode", but Hawthorne goes directly into Sir Humphrey mode...
@8:15 Helen Mirren gassing on as she has nothing else to say. Nigel was magnitudes better than her.
Oh god, this was when Margaret Thatcher was referring to herself in the third person like she was the Queen and the "Soul of the Nation". What a burk.
Helen Mirren is ravishing.
Absolutely adore Paul, and Nigel and Derek in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, they were a fantastic trio in those series. I did not watch the series when they were originally on, I was a child/teenager, but I bought the box set several years ago and I have watched them to absolute death and love every episode. Paul Eddington was an adorable actor and a lovely man, and Nigel Hawthorne and Derek Fowlds were also wonderful, I loved those three together - a fantastic team. Best series I have ever bought on DVD. RIP to all three of them, Paul, Nigel and Derek.
I found him so funny and lovable in "Mapp and Lucia".
What a shame Paul never got a Bafta for Hacker … what that man can do with subtle changes of facial expressions is beyond genius … example excellence: “A reeeeeal frieeeend” … smirk + gleam in the eyes and shining reflection on his fangs 😂 (the Christmas special episode)
it is more than a sitcom, it is a timeles documentation about politics and bureau-crazy
My sides are splitting. 😬
Real politicians are now only clowns by comparison to the tv series.
God calls me god lmfao
You really pick up from the eye contact and hair flicking how much Felicity adores Paul Eddington, and why not, we all did.
Wonderful material of course, but hate the long intro. And the music, which adds nothing.
The best of 'em!
I'm probably the only person to think that Paul Eddi ngton was a distinctl y average actor whose abilities showed up against the great Nigel Hawthorne.
I'm worried about by my sanity as I actually understood Sir Humphrey
Given Paul Eddington’s Quaker beliefs and deeply held personal views, this would have been totally cringe for him, goes to show what a true professional he was. A man that did no harm…..God bless him.
What has quaker beliefs got to do with this?
The interviewer was absolutely smitten with Paul the way she was playing with her hair and constantly smiling 😊
I just wish she would shut up after asking a question and then talking over his answer. Incredibly rude and frustrating because you don’t get a full answer.
@@1701SPWell, they were great friends as well as costars, so it’s really the casual conversation of friends rather than a formal interview.
“The interviewer”? That’s Felicity freaking Kendal! Paul’s costar in The Good Life.
Through all that failure as a struggling actor to a legendary artist in his field, this man is simply unstoppable. Sorely missed you are Sir Nigel Appleby. ❤
It's not a sitcom, it's a bloody DOCUMENTARY. And I for one will say this now in this day and age of simpletons and nincompoops at Westminster today, like the dearly departed Boris Ivanovich ex-Mayor of London and once a PM who thought a garden party would boost his chances for longevity in politics. 😂
I understand this was nearly 40 years ago (gosh!) but the acoustics for this interview are terrible! Partnered with a sickly sounding audience makes it incredibly distracting.
Felicity Kendall. Some might say she was no great beauty but she's utterly charming and pretty much every boy in school was in love with her.
FK said "PM of England" seemingly unaware that England has neither a PM, a government nor a parliament. Nice but dim?
Very sorry for Paul and Nigel to have to sit down with a war criminal
Hysterical 😂
It was a good TV series. Paul Eddington was more than suitable for the role.
Brilliant!
I have a the historical series “Septered isle “. The series is adapted from radio and is narrated by Anna Massey and Paul Eddington . His dictation is perfect , his accent a breath of fresh air . A classic Englishman and treasure .
"as long as she's got big tits" 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I miss shows like these. There was a charm to this level of elegance and grace. I think that's why I love Fry so much. There's an effortless affability about self-depricating humour that I always found wonderful.
